You have scheduled a written knowledge or retest at MDOT MVA. Please review the information below to be prepared for your appointment and/or retest. For additional questions on written knowledge/ retesting

WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO:- All commercial driver license (CDL) knowledge tests as well as the Class A & B non-commercial knowledge tests are only given in English and Spanish.
- Foreign language interpreters may not assist with any CDL or non-commercial Class A or B knowledge or skills test.
- No CDL knowledge tests will be given after 3pm Monday-Friday and 10am on Saturdays.
- Applicants can retake the test the next business day after failing for the first time.
- Applicants must wait (7) calendar days after failing the test two or more times for ANY non-commercial or commercial knowledge test.
- The specific knowledge test that you must take depends upon which class of license (A, B, C, or M) or Moped Permit you are applying.
FOR NON-COMMERICAL TEST TAKERS:
- A typical test for a non-commercial Class C, the Moped Permit, and the Class M consist of 25 questions.
- A typical test for the non-commercial Class A and Class B consist of 20 questions.
- It may be timed and a score of 85% or better is required to pass.
- Tests are usually administered on a computer and are available in English, Spanish, and multiple other languages. The use of foreign language and sign language interpreters is permitted. Visit the Translation Providers page for more information on all languages and services available.
- Computer assisted audio tests are also available. Please note that oral tests require a special appointment, so contact the branch directly to schedule.
FOR COMMERICAL TEST TAKERS:
- The test version you receive will depend upon the class of license (A, B, or C) you request.
- General Knowledge examination must be taken first for new CDL applicants.
- Tests are administered on a computer.
- Computer and written tests are in English ONLY.
- Computer assisted audio tests are also available.
- Oral tests require an appointment and are only given in English by an MDOT MVA agent.

FIRST TIME TEST TAKERS, PLEASE BRING THE FOLLOWING ITEMS TO YOUR APPOINTMENT:
- One proof of age and identity
- One proof of social security
- Two proofs of residency
- For RETEST takers bring the scoresheet from your last test.
- For CDL RETEST takers bring your scoresheet from your last test and medical certificate card.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
Refer to the instructions on your day of confirmation email or text as to where to check in for your appoinment.
