Replace a License or ID

If your Maryland driver’s license or ID card is lost, destroyed, or stolen, you can get a duplicate license from the MVA. A duplicate is an official replacement that has the same license number and expiration date as your original license. The MVA does not require a police report to obtain a replacement license if your license is lost or stolen.

If you have a myMVA online services account, you can order a duplicate license quickly and easily. Creating an account can save you time and effort.

Replacing your license or ID

  1. Choose how to apply for a replacement

    Option 1: Request a duplicate license online (fastest option)

    Log in to your myMVA online services to request a duplicate license.

    Option 2: Request a duplicate license at a self-service kiosk

    Visit a kiosk at one of our branch office locations.

    Option 3: In-person at an MVA branch

    Visit a Maryland MVA office in-person to for a duplicate license or ID if:

    • Your license was stolen and you can't get into your myMVA account
    • You have a condition on your record that prevents online replacement (such as a suspension or certain restrictions)
    • You cannot verify your identity online

    If required, bring proper proof of identity and residency with you to your appointment.

  2. Personal information you need to have

    To request a duplicate license or ID online or kiosk service you will need:

    1. Your driver’s license or ID number
    2. Your date of birth
    3. Either your MVA PIN or the last 4 digits of your Social Security number

  3. Pay the required fee for your duplicate license or ID

What to expect after requesting a duplicate

  • If you apply online or at a kiosk, your duplicate license will be mailed to your address on file.
    • Allow up to 10 business days for delivery
    • The MVA will mail the duplicate license or ID to your residential address on record, unless you have chosen another mailing address or updated your address with the MVA. Mail from the MVA will not be forwarded by USPS.
    • Keep your address current with the MVA so your replacement is mailed to the right place
  • Use your receipt as temporary proof of identity until your license arrives.
  • Your duplicate license will look like your original and will show the same expiration date
  • If you find your old license after receiving your duplicate, you should destroy or return it; do not use it
  • If your duplicate is for a learner’s permit, moped permit, or certain special licenses, you may receive an "Interim Receipt” to carry until your official credential arrives

More information about duplicate licenses or IDs

Maryland does not require you to report a lost license to the MVA just because it is lost or destroyed. You may choose to file a police report if your license was stolen to flag it for MVA's database, but it is not required for a license replacement.
