If you have a Maryland Motorcycle Safety Program Completion Certificate, you do not have to take the Motorcycle Skills Test to get your motorcycle license or endorsement.

Proper motorcycle
You must use a motorcycle that:
- Is safe and in good working condition
- Has a valid registration card
- Is appropriate for the class you are testing (A or B)
- Has tires and brakes in good condition
- Is free of mechanical defects
If any safety item is not working, the examiner may refuse to test you until the issue is corrected.
Required documentation
On test day, bring:
- Your motorcycle learner’s permit
- Your valid driver’s license (if required)
- Proof of motorcycle registration
- Proof of insurance
If you are a new rider without a Maryland driver’s license, you must bring documents to verify your identity and residency, per MVA requirements.
Safety gear
During the skills test, you must wear proper safety gear, including:
- Helmet
- Eye protection
- Long pants
- Over-the-ankle footwear
The examiner will not begin the test if you are not properly dressed for safety.
What the motorcycle skills test covers
The motorcycle skills test covers basic vehicle control skills on a closed course. Basic control skills include:
- Starting and stopping smoothly
- Turning without losing control
- Maintaining balance
- Operating the clutch and throttle correctly
The examiner will watch how you handle the bike during each exercise and evaluates your ability to ride safely with proper technique.
After your motorcycle skills test
If you pass all portions of the motorcycle skills test:
- The examiner will notify you
- Your test results will be processed
- Your motorcycle endorsement or license will be issued
If you do not pass:
- You may retest after a waiting period
- Practice the skills you missed before scheduling again
Important notes
- Arrive early on test day so you have time to complete vehicle inspection and check-in.
- If your motorcycle is not safe, you may be asked to reschedule your test.
- The examiner’s decision is based on your safe control and operation of the motorcycle.
