Bulletin: Dealers and Tag & Title Agents
From: Vehicle Services Division
PURPOSE
To inform ERT users that tag transfers between vehicles with differing weights can be successfully processed through ERT.
SUMMARY
The transfer of tags from one vehicle to another has been a standard practice used by vehicle owners when purchasing a new vehicle while time remains on their previous registration. These transactions have typically been submitted to MVA for processing because ERT solutions were not able to accommodate the calculation in fee differences when tags are transferred to a vehicle with a weight that differs from the vehicle the tags are originating from.
ERT vendors have confirmed that updates have been made to allow the successful transfer of tags with the appropriate fee calculation. It is no longer necessary to submit transactions involving a tag transfer to MVA for processing.
MVA encourages transferring tags as a convenience and cost-saving measure for customers.
The MVA also recommends processing the tag transfer transaction at time of sale. This will allow the dealership to provide the customer with a new registration card and sticker. This will also avoid the need for the dealership to use a temporary tag or the Temporary Registration Permit (CS-124). When tags are transferred in lieu of issuing temporary tags, ensure your customer keeps the yellow or white copy of the 60-day Temporary Registration Permit (CS-124) in the vehicle until the customer receives the title for their new vehicle.
