GLEN BURNIE, MD –The Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration (MDOT MVA) today hosted its 2026 Earth Day Celebration, highlighting the agency’s ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship and the modernization of its operations to enhance the customer service experience, support environmental sustainability and reduce the agency’s environmental impact. MDOT MVA’s actions also support the Moore-Miller Administration’s goals to be a leader in clean energy.
The Earth Day Celebration, held for employees at the agency’s headquarters in Glen Burnie, is part of a month-long celebration of Earth Month. The agency’s Earth Day Celebration featured the annual Recycled Art Contest, which showcases employee creativity through works made from repurposed materials. Additional events this month include an e-waste recycling drive and an environmental scavenger hunt.
“Environmental protection and sustainability help drive our agency’s work to deliver premier customer service and promote the mobility and safety of Marylanders,” said MDOT MVA Administrator Chrissy Nizer. “I am proud of the steps we have taken to transform our operations to prioritize safety, security, innovation and partnership to benefit our customers and help advance Maryland’s climate goals. We will continue to build on those efforts and our culture of excellence to connect Marylanders to life’s opportunities.”
MDOT MVA has implemented several initiatives that are environmentally beneficial, including a digital transformation that has increased customer access to agency services. The myMVA Online Services portal allows Marylanders to complete more than 60 transactions at home or on the go, including license and registration renewals, payments and address updates. The launch of myMVA Online Services has reduced the need for physical travel for in-person branch visits and resulted in decreased emissions. Customers have completed nearly one million transactions so far in 2026 and completed 5.2 million transactions in 2025. To reduce its environmental footprint, the agency has moved several of its publications online and continues to shift to paperless correspondence for several units and functions, including its Business Licensing Unit.
MDOT MVA is also modernizing its vehicle fleet and infrastructure to help the state meet its goals of reaching zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045. To date, the agency has replaced 50% of its vehicle fleet with electric vehicles, and installed electric vehicle chargers at Beltsville, Largo, Gaithersburg, and Salisbury branch locations for public use.
Later this year, the agency will install three new boilers, one of which will be electric on its Glen Burnie campus which will run at 90% efficiency or greater. The agency also expects to install solar panels which will generate energy and reduce the need for petroleum products.
The agency also maintains an environmental management program and engages in a robust recycling program for plastics, license plates and electronics to divert significant waste from landfills. In 2025, this program resulted in 981 tons of material recycled, which equates to:
- 7,446 trees;
- 5,853 barrels of oil;
- 4.8 million kilowatt hours of electricity; and
- 1,445 cubic yards of landfill space.
Beyond its operations and infrastructure, the MVA continues to support statewide conservation efforts, collecting nearly $400,000 for the Tree-mendous Maryland Program to plant over 9,700 native trees across the state. The agency has also planted 41 trees in support of the Five Million Trees Initiative.
