What to expect from driver's education in Maryland

New drivers must complete a Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA)-approved Driver's Education Course consisting of a minimum of:

• 30 hours classroom instruction, and
• Six hours behind-the-wheel instruction

Your driving school will electronically submit verification of completion to the MVA. 

When applying for a provisional license, you must also present the completed skills practice log and completed certification page along with your unexpired Maryland learner's instructional permit

The Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) offers a list of providers as a public service. The MVA does not endorse or recommend any individual, business, or organization included on the Provider Listing. MVA is not responsible for the performance or non-performance of the providers; however, MVA has established guidelines, and any violation may result in termination of the agreement between the provider and MVA. If any information in these listings is found to be inaccurate, or if you have other concerns about a school on the list, please contact the MVA's Business Licensing and Compliance Division.

Does MVA accept out-of-state driver's education?

Yes, but only from certain states and programs. Check below and if you don't see your state listed, email the MVA Driver Education team to request a review.

How to submit an out-of-state driver education completion 

1. Email your out-of-state driver education completion documentation to the MVA's Driver's Education team.
    
2. ​The department will review your request and contact you within two business days. If approved, you will receive a letter to bring to your appointment to verify completion of your driver education requirement.​

​​What if my driving school closes?

Driving schools usually do not close in the middle of training. However, if the school you are attending closes unexpectedly, the MVA will review available documentation and give you credit for training you have completed.

Steps to take if your driving school closes

• Make sure you have copies of your records. If you do not have a copy of your records, email the MVA's Driver's Education team.
• File a claim with the insurance company that issued the school’s surety bond. You will need copies of student records and receipts showing any payments made to the driving school.
• Select a new driving school to complete your training.
• Bring your completion forms to the new driving school. Ask them to make copies for their records. Please keep your originals for your records. The new school will determine what training you may still need and the cost. After you complete all the requirements, the new school will certify the completion of your training so that you can schedule your driving skills test.

What the driving school is required to do

If a driving school closes, it is required to:

• Send all student records dating back three (3) years from the date of closure to the MVA.
• Immediately stop providing any training after sending all records, licenses, and official MVA documentation to the MVA.
• Provide refunds to any customer who has paid for, but not received, any aspect of training.
