Duplicate or Corrected Salvage Certificate

A Maryland Certificate of Salvage is a document issued by the MVA that establishes the ownership of a vehicle.  Unlike a vehicle that has a title, a vehicle with a salvage certificate may not be operated on public roads.  You may request a "duplicate" salvage certificate if your original certificate has been lost, destroyed, altered, or mutilated.  If information on your original certificate is incorrect, you must request a "corrected" salvage certificate.

How do I request a duplicate salvage certificate?

Complete an Application for a Salvage Certificate and submit it to the Salvage Unit in the Glen Burnie office.

If you wish to receive the duplicate salvage certificate when you apply in person, you will also need to bring in a proof of your identity such as your driver's license.  Otherwise, the duplicate will be mailed to you.

How do I request a corrected salvage certificate?

Complete an Application for a Salvage Certificate and submit it, with your original salvage certificate, to the Salvage Unit in the Glen Burnie office.  You also need to submit a letter explaining what information needs to be corrected, unless you apply for the corrected certificate in person, in which case you can verbally explain what information needs to be corrected.

Note:  Corrections to vehicle or owner information may be processed in this manner.  Corrections to brand/damage statement on the salvage certificate may require additional documentation.

Effective October 1, 2010:

  • The cosmetic brand will no longer be used in Maryland for salvage certificates unless the salvage certificate is being corrected or a duplicate is being issued.
  • The verbiage of the previous brand "Equal to or less than fair market value" will be changed to "Damage is 75% or less of fair market value."  Any salvage certificates requiring a correction in which the previous brand is "Equal to or less than fair market value" will be branded with "Damage is 75% or less of fair market value."

Fees:

  • There is a fee for a duplicate or corrected salvage certificate.
