Welcome to the new MVA.Maryland.gov!

Donating a vehicle is a generous way to support a charitable organization. To protect yourself and make sure the donation is handled correctly, follow the steps below.
This page explains what you need to do when donating a vehicle in Maryland.
Before you donate a vehicle
Choose a legitimate charity
Make sure the organization you are donating to is a recognized charitable organization.
Some charities work with licensed dealers to sell donated vehicles. This is allowed, but the paperwork must still be completed correctly.
Be cautious if:
- Someone pressures you to donate quickly
- The charity cannot explain how the vehicle will be used
- You are asked to leave the title blank
Check the vehicle title
You must have a valid Certificate of Title to donate a vehicle. The title proves legal ownership of the vehicle.
The title must:
- Be in your name
- Match the vehicle’s VIN
- Be free of liens, or show a lien release
How to donate a vehicle
Step 1: Transfer the title
On the Certificate of Title:
- Enter the charity’s name as the buyer
- Record the odometer reading (required by federal law)
- Sign and date the title exactly as your name appears
Do not leave the buyer section blank.
Step 2: Ask for a bill of sale or donation receipt
Ask the charity for a donation receipt or provide a bill of sale showing:
- Your name
- The charity’s name
- Vehicle information
- Date of donation
This helps protect you and may be needed for tax purposes.
Step 3: Remove your license plates
Before giving the vehicle to the charity, remove your license plates.
After you donate a vehicle
Step 1: Return or transfer your license plates
You may:
Complete your return or transfer as soon as possible to avoid insurance penalties or registration issues
Step 2: Cancel insurance on the vehicle
Contact your insurance company after the donation is complete and plates are returned.
Important things to know
- You are responsible for the vehicle until the title is properly transferred.
- Do not donate a vehicle without completing the title.
- Charities or their authorized dealers are responsible for inspection, titling and resale after the transfer.
- Improper title transfers can result in fines or liability issues.
