Maryland Secures Federal REAL ID Recertification

GLEN BURNIE, MD –The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has formally recertified the State of Maryland’s continuous compliance with federal REAL ID requirements. Under the Moore-Miller Administration, 99.56% of Maryland’s licenses and identification cards are REAL ID compliant as of September, which is among the highest in the nation. TSA’s determination allows federal agencies to continue accepting Maryland-issued REAL IDs, including identity verification at TSA airport security checkpoints.
The federal recertification affirms that the Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) continues to meet federal standards for the issuance of secure, REAL ID-compliant driver’s licenses and identification cards.
“I am proud of our team’s continuous work to maintain Maryland’s compliance with federal REAL ID requirements while strengthening the security of our identification products and protection of customers’ personal information,” said Motor Vehicle Administrator Chrissy Nizer. “The Moore-Miller Administration’s investments in technology including the launch of myMVA, a real-time dashboard and other system enhancements are helping Marylanders manage their credentials more securely and conveniently.”
Data from the MVA shows there are currently more than 4.9 million active REAL ID licenses and identification cards statewide.
The federal REAL ID Act requires all states to recertify and periodically demonstrate continued compliance with federal standards established by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The recertification process includes review of state policies, procedures, physical security controls and record management.
Maryland has been a national leader in REAL ID implementation. In 2011, Maryland was among the first states in the nation to have its REAL ID process certified and it became the first state to receive federal recertification from the Department of Homeland Security in 2019.
Maryland residents who need to obtain or upgrade to a REAL ID must provide documentation establishing their identity and age, Social Security number and Maryland residency. Eligible Maryland residents can visit the MVA website to learn more about obtaining a REAL ID.
