GLEN BURNIE, MD – The Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) announced its recent recognition by the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA) with six awards for its commitment to community service, innovation and creativity in communicating with government stakeholders and the public. Under the Moore-Miller Administration, the MVA has worked to Leave No One Behind and support the needs of customers.

AAMVA’s awards program honors individuals, teams, and organizations who have committed their time and resources to safety and security initiatives, outstanding customer service, and public affairs and consumer educational programs throughout North America.

“I am incredibly proud of the hard work and dedication of the MVA team, and that they continue to stand out amongst exceptional efforts from our colleagues across North America," said Maryland Motor Vehicle Administrator Chrissy Nizer. "Each member of our team finds ways to provide premier customer service to Marylanders through their kindness, dedication and developing news ways to deliver our products and services.  I am pleased to showcase the efforts we make to assist customers during difficult times as well as our commitment to creativity and innovation to make our state safer and more secure.”

The MVA was recognized at the regional and national level for the following projects:

Community Service: Western Maryland Flood Assistance

In May of 2025, a stationary storm dumped nearly a foot of rain in Allegany County, Maryland, causing significant flooding and more than $10 million in damage. As a result, many Marylanders lost important documents needed to access emergency benefits.

The MVA Cumberland Branch and Customer Contact Center conducted outreach in affected areas to connect with residents directly, answer questions and help them replace important documents needed for emergency assistance.

Innovative Use of Technology: Mobile ID Check by MD
MVA’s Mobile ID Check by MD app, a free and secure tool that allows businesses to verify mobile driver’s licenses (mDLs) and physical identification using only a smartphone. Mobile ID Check by MD reflects Maryland’s commitment to delivering modern, convenient, and privacy-focused digital services to customers and providing an easy and cost-efficient tool to businesses for identity verification.

Website: Data Dashboard

The MVA launched a real-time data dashboard designed to provide customers with up-to-the-minute information on branch office wait times, average visit durations, available services and other important metrics. This publicly available information empowers Marylanders to make informed decisions about when and where to access MVA services and increases transparency around the customer experience.

The dashboard utilizes Microsoft Power BI software and is optimized for both desktop and mobile devices.

Publication and Visual Arts: Cheswick the Crab Activity Book

The MVA’s Highway Safety Office (MHSO) created Cheswick’s Grand Adventure to promote pedestrian, bicycle and scooter safety among children ages 5 through 12. This 15-page interactive activity book uses Cheswick the Safety Crab to teach children how to travel safely, pay attention to surroundings and make smart choices. The book incorporates puzzles, coloring pages, mazes, connect-the-dots activities and word games to transform safety education into an engaging adventure.

Social Media: Share the Road with Trucks

The MVA launched its Share the Road with Trucks social media campaign ahead of the busy summer travel season, a time when more Marylanders take to highways and encounter larger commercial vehicles. Collisions involving large trucks can be severe due to the weight and size of these vehicles. The campaign generated 450,000 impressions and 3,800 engagements.

Informative Writing: Six-Month Renewal Email

The MVA now sends reminders to customers six months ahead of their driver’s license renewal with suggestions to make the process easier. The email reminder features the subject line: “Time Flies – LOOKING Ahead to Your Next Driver’s License Renewal,” and a GIF of a hawk staring and blinking back at them.
