WHAT:
Officials of the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT), including members of the MDOT Motor Vehicle Administration (MDOT MVA), the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) and MDOT State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will join representatives from the Maryland State Police (MSP), the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and AAA Mid-Atlantic near the Chesapeake Bay Bridge to remind motorists to stay safe as more people set out to travel this Memorial Day weekend and through the summer. Officials are stressing safety on the Maryland roadways and waterways. The MDTA will also provide the best travel times and key safety tips for motorists to cross the Bay Bridge throughout the holiday weekend and beyond.

WHY:
In 2021, 559 people were killed on Maryland roadways. Nearly half of those fatalities occurred from May through September, with the deadliest month being August with 67 fatalities. Each year, the causes of those crashes remain the same including impaired, distracted and aggressive driving, as well as lack of seat belt use – all reasons that are completely preventable.
