You’ve reached the new website for the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration. Thanks for visiting!
Tips for success
Practice the pre-trip inspection before test day. Know what you need to check.
Practice basic control skills (like backing and turning) before test day.
Bring everything the MVA requires to your appointment. Missing documents can delay or cancel your test.
If you need to reschedule, do so at least 24 hours before to avoid a no-show fee.
Steps to a successful CDL Skills test
You must have your learner's permit for at least two weeks before you can take the skills test.
-
Before your CDL Skills test: Complete Entry-Level Driver Training
Before you can take your skills test, you must complete Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT). The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requires this training. The Maryland Motor Vehicle Association (MVA) will not allow you to test until it is finished.
-
Schedule your skills test
You must make an appointment for your CDL skills test. You can schedule it online through your myMVA account.
-
Get ready to test
Be on time & ready to take your test
Arrive at your appointment on time. Weather, road conditions and traffic may affect your test start time or length. Be patient and prepared.
Bring required documents and items
On the day of your test, bring:
- Your valid Maryland CDL learner’s permit or CDL for the class you are testing (for example, Class A or Class B).
- Your Medical Examiner’s Certificate (DOT card) and approved medical waiver/exemption, if applicable.
- Glasses or contact lenses if you must wear them to meet vision requirements.
- Qualified accompanying driver, if needed:
- If a supervising driver is required (for example, if you drive your test vehicle to the site), that person must:
- Be 21 years old or older
- Have held a valid Maryland or out-of-state CDL of the same class or higher for at least three years
- Have a valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate (DOT card) and waiver/exemption, if applicable.
- If a supervising driver is required (for example, if you drive your test vehicle to the site), that person must:
- Your test vehicle:
- You must provide a safe representative vehicle that matches the class and type of CDL you are testing for.
- The vehicle must be in safe operating condition and have a visible VIN plate.
- If you are testing with a trailer, the trailer must also have a visible VIN plate and be properly registered.
- The vehicle and trailer must have a valid registration card and proof of insurance.
- Vehicles that are placarded for hazardous materials cannot be used for the skills test.
- If you use a rental vehicle, your name must be on the rental agreement as a driver.
-
Take your CDL skills test
Your CDL skills test includes:
- Pre-trip vehicle inspection — Demonstrate that you know how to inspect your commercial vehicle safely and correctly.
- Basic control skills — Show you can control the vehicle in a safe, controlled environment. This may include backing and maneuvering exercises.
- On-road driving — Drive on public roads and safely operate the vehicle in real traffic conditions.
-
After your CDL skills test
If you fail any part of the skills test and want to try again, there is a $20 "no show" fee before you can schedule another appointment.
Once you successfully complete all parts of your CDL skills test, the agent will verify your documents and eligibility. Your new CDL will be issued and mailed to you in 7 to 10 business days.
For more information on fees, visit the Fees & Payment Options page.
Frequently asked questions
CDL Skills Test FAQ
You must hold your CLP for at least two weeks before you can take the CDL skills test.
If you fail, you may retake the test based on the following schedule:
- First failure — you may retest one day later, depending on appointment availability
- Second or subsequent failure — you must wait at least seven days before retesting, depending on appointment availability
You must pay any retest or no-show fees before scheduling your next appointment.
You are permitted to use an audio back-up warning device or a back-up camera.
Using them does not substitute for a driver's responsibility and skill, however. You must continue to observe traffic and use the vehicle's mirrors properly.
You will be scored on the requirements and criteria of the skills test and backing a motor vehicle requires skill and good judgment. Do not rely solely on the use of back-up equipment.
Automatic parking features, which are equipped in some vehicles, are not permitted during the skills test. Using mirrors, observing traffic, and looking around are some of the proper precautions to safely back up your vehicle.
No. If your CLP expires before you complete or pass the skills test, you must reapply for a new permit, pass the knowledge tests and pay the required fees.
All commercial driver's license skills tests (as well as the class A and B noncommercial skills tests) are given only in English.
The CDL knowledge tests can be taken in English or Spanish.
Language interpreters may not assist with any commercial or noncommercial class A or B skills test or knowledge test.
Maryland CLP holders can complete their skills tests in another state. The permit must be valid and cannot expire before the new Maryland CDL can be issued.
However, Maryland does not perform CDL skills tests for permit holders from other states. Please make certain that the state in which you wish to be tested will do so before obtaining a Maryland CLP.
See our CDL Classifications, Endorsements & Restrictions page to learn about removing restrictions.
