Motor vehicle records that contain personal information are confidential and can only be released in limited circumstances. Other Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) records and data are available to the public online or by request. Business licensing and procurement records may have restrictions under the Maryland Public Information Act (PIA).

Public Information Act (PIA) requests
The PIA gives you the right to request information about how government agencies operate and how public officials carry out their duties. While many records are available, some—especially those containing personal information—are protected by law.
If the record you’re looking for is not listed among the MVA List of Immediately Available Documents, you must submit a signed records request.

You can request your Maryland driving record online, in person or by mail.
View, print, and order certified or non-certified driving records anytime in your myMVA account. You can view and print a non-certified record immediately or order a certified driving record.
You can request your driving record by mailing or bringing in a completed form:

There is a fee to get your driving record, depending on the kind you need, certified or non-certified. Visit the fees page for details.
When you request your driving record, you choose:
- Certified Record: A record with an official MVA seal (usually required for court, insurance, or employment purposes). A certified record will be mailed to the address you have on file with the MVA.
- Non-Certified Record: For personal review. You will be able to download a PDF of your non-certified record to print.
You also can choose the Driving Record type:
- Complete Driving Record: A summary of your whole driving history, including traffic/moving violations, convictions (like DUI), crash history, suspensions or revocations, license status, and points on your driving record.
- Three-Year Driving Record: Your driving history for the last three years.
There are many reasons you might need your record, like a job application with a driving background check, insurance or court requirements, or just a personal review. Make sure you choose the record you need when requesting.
To protect your privacy, the MVA requires proof that you are the person on the record.
When you request your driving record, you must verify:
- Your full legal name
- Your date of birth
- Your Social Security number (as required)
- Your current address
This helps ensure your record is only released to you or an authorized person. Visit the Privacy & Security page for more information on how the MVA protects your data.
If you are requesting another person’s driving record, you must submit one of the following documents with your request:
- Letter of authorization signed by the driver or vehicle’s owner – The letter must clearly state that the customer (requestor) has the driver or vehicle owner’s permission to obtain the report/document.
- Power of attorney (VR-470 - PDF) – The form must specifically mention the customer (requestor). A copy of the registered owner(s) state issued identification must accompany the Power of Attorney and the person submitting must present their state issued identification.
- Employment application from the customer.
- Credit application from the customer.
- Subpoena or court order.
- Request letter on an authorized (by the Driver Privacy Protection Act – DPPA) entity’s letterhead – an authorized representative of the agency or company should sign the letter.
- Business card from a DPPA authorized entity (in-person requests only) – Both the entity’s name and the customer’s (requestor’s) name must appear on the business card. As mentioned above the customer also will need to show proof of identity.
- Payment check with a DPPA authorized entity’s name imprinted on it.

Plan ahead if you need your record by a specific date.
Yes. Employers may request your driving record for job-related reasons (such as commercial driving positions), but they must pay the required fees and may need your consent depending on the record type.
If you find errors on your driving record:
- Contact the MVA immediately
- Provide documentation supporting the correct information
- The MVA will investigate and correct errors when appropriate
