Renew Registration
Welcome to the new MVA.Maryland.gov!
You’ve reached the new website for the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration. Thanks for visiting!
When to renew
Renew before your current registration expires. Most registrations are valid for two years.
The MVA will send you a renewal notice when it's time.
Driving with an expired registration may result in fines.
Renew your registration on time to keep driving legally in Maryland. Renewal confirms your vehicle is insured and eligible to be on the road.
Ways to renew

-
Renew in person
You must renew in person if your vehicle has unresolved issues. You also can choose in-person service if you need assistance.
-
Renew by mail

What you need to renew
Before you renew, make sure you have:
- Valid Maryland vehicle insurance
- No unresolved vehicle flags
- Payment for the registration fee
Insurance
Maryland law requires continuous vehicle insurance coverage. If there's an issue with your insurance, resolve it before renewing.
Vehicle flags
A vehicle flag is a hold on your record that can block renewal. Common causes include insurance lapses, unpaid tolls or citations, and emissions issues. Clear all flags before renewing.
Fees
Registration fees are based on vehicle type, weight, and registration period. Fees are set by regulation and may change.
After you renew
After your renewal is processed:
- You will receive a new registration card and stickers by mail
- Place the stickers on your license plate as instructed
