As age increases, older drivers experience multiple challenges on the road. The issue is not about being older, but the physical and cognitive issues with aging that impact fitness to drive safely. Clinicians play an integral role in recognizing at-risk drivers in your daily interaction regarding functional abilities with patients and clients. Discussions will focus on awareness of these unique challenges and risks faced by aging drivers; the significance of functional deficits that are likely to affect driving; identifying drivers who may be medically at-risk for unsafe driving; and understanding the MVA’s process of referral and evaluation for medical fitness to drive. Also, the workshop will consider local resources & tools for use in interacting with aging drivers and their caregivers.
