Information about
vehicle or its
license plates may have been incorrectly saved in the MVA’s database. When you receive your title, Security Interest Filing (SIF – lien holders only), registration card and/or license plates, carefully review them and immediately report any errors to the MVA.
If you need to report a changed or incorrect name or address, refer to Changing or Correcting Customer Name and Address.
The MVA does not have a specific form for reporting errors. You can request that information be corrected either verbally or in writing as indicated below. If the vehicle’s title or Security Interest Filing (SIF) includes the error, it must be returned to the MVA before a corrected document can be issued. Other documents displaying the error should also be returned to avoid confusion.
Vehicle or mileage information corrections can be requested:
- in person at any of the MVA’s full service branch offices; or
- by letter to the MVA’s Corrections Unit in the Glen Burnie office; or
- in person at an MVA licensed tag and title service.
Information that may be incorrect includes:
Vehicle Identification Information - displayed on the title, SIF and registration card
- Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
- Class
- Year
- Make
- Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW)
- Gross Combination Weight (GCW)
- Body Style
Vehicle Mileage Information - displayed on the title
- Odometer reading
- Brand code
Note: Proof of an incorrect odometer reading satisfactory to the MVA must be submitted before a change of mileage information will be considered. The proof could include:
- Letter from dealer explaining why the mileage is incorrect; or
- The last three (3) most recent repair orders; or
- Recondition report, if available.
A new title and registration card will be issued to you after the error is confirmed. Note that you must return your incorrect title before a new title can be printed. Titles are usually mailed unless the vehicle owner requests the correction in person and presents adequate identification. Lien holders will receive a corrected Security Interest Filing (SIF) after they return the original, incorrect SIF.

License plate information corrections can be requested:
- in person at any of the MVA’s full service branch offices; or
- by mail to the MVA’s Corrections Unit in the Glen Burnie office; or

- Incorrect year sticker - does not match the expiration date on the registration card or other MVA record.
- Incorrect sticker number - does not match the sticker number on the registration card or other MVA record.
A new registration card and/or license plates may be issued to you, as applicable, after the error is confirmed.
Fees:
- A corrected title fee will apply unless the correction is due to an MVA error. Usually there is no charge for issuing a corrected SIF, registration card, or license plates/stickers. However, there is a fee to transfer the plates. In addition, a correction to the Gross Vehicle Weight (GVW) or Gross Combination Weight (GCW) could result in the collection of an additional registration fee.
