​Air Emissions

All stationary sources of air emissions at MVA facilities (boilers, backup generators, etc.) are permitted, as required by the Maryland Department of the Environment.

The MVA uses natural gas as the primary fuel for the boilers. Compared to oil, natural gas is a cleaner burning fuel that results in reduced emissions. All MVA equipment receives scheduled preventative maintenance to ensure optimal performance. In addition, efficiency testing is also conducted routinely on the boilers.

What can you do to reduce air emissions?

  • Purchase low VOC products, Energy Star appliances and compact florescent lights.
  • Turn off lights when you leave a room and unplug appliances when they are not in use.
  • Recycle and reuse materials.
  • Perform routine maintenance on heating and air conditioning units.
  • If possible, purchase renewable power through your public utility.
  • Have an energy audit done for your home and identify any problem areas.
