Through the MVA's Organ Donor Program, Marylanders can give the gift of life and health to someone else by donating organs or other tissues after death.

Look for the statement on your license application or renewal that says: "Please check if, upon your death, you desire to help others by becoming an organ donor." If you want to be a donor, check the "Yes" box.

A record of your intent will be registered with the MVA and you can chose whether or not you want to add a red heart symbol, indicating that you are a donor, on your driver's license or identification card. When you check "yes" to become an organ donor, specific personal information such as your name, date of birth and address are submitted to the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and maintained in the Maryland Organ Donor Registry. It's important to tell your family about your wishes, because the donation is usually discussed with one's next of kin. Discuss your plans in detail with them.

Notes:

• If you select “YES” to register to become an organ donor and you select “YES” to have the red heart organ donor symbol, it will be placed on your driver's license or identification card. The symbol will remain on all future licenses or ID cards unless you decide to have it removed. If you wish to remove the designation or the red heart symbol, you may request a corrected driver's license or ID card through the MVA's web site, kiosk or in person at any full service MVA office.
• There is no fee for adding or removing an organ donor designation or the red heart symbol.
• There is no fee for obtaining a corrected driver's license or ID card if the only change is the organ donor designation or the red heart symbol.
