Around 10:30 a.m., MDOT MVA customers and staff were evacuated from the building, located at 6601 Ritchie Highway in Glen Burnie, following a report of a gas leak. The damaged gas main is located in the building’s parking lot, which is currently under construction. Baltimore Gas and Electric responded to the scene as well as fire and emergency response crews from Anne Arundel County and surrounding areas. After thoroughly assessing the leak and inspecting the facility, emergency responders declared the building safe to enter shortly before 1 p.m.
As a precaution, the Glen Burnie branch and headquarters offices will remain closed the rest of the day and reopen Friday, July 23. Customers with impacted appointments will be contacted to reschedule. The Glen Burnie VEIP station and self-service kiosk will remain open.
“As unexpected challenges arise, our commitment to maintaining a safe environment for customers and staff remains our top priority,” said MDOT MVA Administrator Chrissy Nizer. “I appreciate the fast action of the emergency responders and our employees who worked to make sure everyone was evacuated safely. We will work quickly to accommodate the customers whose appointments were affected by this unforeseen situation.”
