MDOT MVA Branch Offices, VEIP Stations Closed November 11 for Veterans Day; Will Honor Veterans November 7-9

GLEN BURNIE, Md. (November 6, 2019) – The Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration (MDOT MVA) will close all branch offices and VEIP stations on Monday, November 11, in observance of Veterans Day. Prior to that, November 7-9, the agency will celebrate Maryland’s veterans by issuing service members – both active and retired – commemorative notepads as a gesture of appreciation.

“We’re very proud to show our appreciation for veterans who come to us as customers, and also honor the men and women at MDOT MVA who served our country and now serve their communities through their work,” said MDOT MVA Administrator Chrissy Nizer.

Under Governor Larry Hogan’s direction, MDOT MVA has made customer service improvements to eliminate obstacles that can be faced by veterans conducting business with the agency. Last month MDOT MVA partnered with the Maryland Department of Veterans Affairs (MDVA) to open a new Veterans Service Center at the MDOT MVA Glen Burnie branch. The service center office, on the ground floor at 6601 Ritchie Highway, has a fulltime veteran’s benefits specialist available to assist veterans and families applying for U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs benefits. The Glen Burnie center is the first of its kind in Anne Arundel County, which is home to the second largest veteran population in Maryland.

"While November 11 is the day designated to honor and thank those who have served in our military, every day feels like Veterans Day in our Department. One of our daily goals is to ensure our veterans' experience with the Department is a positive one," said MDVA Secretary Owings. "I could not be happier with our MDOT MVA partnership and the establishment of a veterans service office inside their Glen Burnie branch. For those who have given so much to our State and Nation, this is the least we can do to make doing business with the State easier."

MDOT MVA also announced a new legislative proposal for the 2020 Maryland General Assembly legislative session that would exempt active duty military personnel from the requirements of the state’s Vehicle Emissions Inspection Program (VEIP) if they are deployed outside of the U.S. or stationed in an area that doesn’t have an emissions inspection facility. Under the proposal, active duty military customers who meet the requirements would be able to defer testing of their vehicles for one inspection cycle, which is two years for certain vehicles, and may apply for additional waivers for as long as they qualify.

MDOT MVA also has several ways for veterans to show their pride. Driver license and identification card holders can add “Veterans Status” to their card, which indicates they are eligible for state veteran benefits. MDOT MVA also issues permanent vehicle registration cards and license plate stickers to Maryland veterans who qualify as 100 percent disabled.
