Reporting a Stolen or Recovered Vehicle

If your vehicle has been stolen, immediately contact your local police. They will notify the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) about the theft. The NCIC is a federal agency that maintains a database on all types of crimes committed in the United States.

Should I also inform the MVA about the theft?

As long as you have reported the theft to the police, you do not need to contact the MVA. The MVA receives daily National Crime Information Center (NCIC) reports and updates its database to show that your vehicle is stolen.

What should I do if my vehicle is recovered?

Contact your local police if they are not aware of the vehicle recovery. The police then will notify the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) that your vehicle has been recovered. The MVA's daily reports on recovered vehicles also come from the NCIC and the MVA updates its database to show that your vehicle is no longer stolen.
