Motor Vehicle Administration Expands Birth Certificate Printing Service To Gaithersburg Branch

Service now available at seven branches statewide

GLEN BURNIE, MD (February 23, 2023) – The Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration today announced expansion of its birth certificate printing service to the Gaithersburg branch in Montgomery County. The service, which began in 2021, was developed in partnership with the Maryland Department of Health to assist Maryland-born customers in obtaining their birth certificates to fulfill the proof of identity requirement to obtain a REAL ID. The Gaithersburg branch is the seventh Motor Vehicle Administration branch to implement the service, joining the Annapolis, Baltimore City, Essex, Frederick, Largo and Salisbury branches.

“The expansion of the birth certificate printing service to the Gaithersburg branch is another example of our commitment to providing access to convenient government services for all Maryland residents in a single trip,” said Motor Vehicle Administration Administrator Chrissy Nizer.

The service helped more than 2,900 customers obtain Motor Vehicle Administration products and birth certificates since launching at the Baltimore City branch in March 2021. Customers are required to complete a driver license or identification card transaction to obtain a certified birth certificate at the Motor Vehicle Administration branches where this service is provided. The process was developed with the highest security standards, including customers verifying personal information with one customer agent and providing payment to a second agent to ensure data privacy.

The Maryland Department of Heath sets fees for certified birth certificate copies at $10. The Motor Vehicle Administration does not collect any additional fees for this service and the customer leaves with a new copy of their birth certificate that can be used for additional purposes.

The federal REAL ID Act was passed by Congress after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks to establish minimum security standards for license issuance. By May 7, 2025, all U.S. citizens must have a REAL ID compliant driver’s license or identification card to board a commercial aircraft or gain access to federal facilities or have another federally approved document. This month, the Motor Vehicle Administration announced more than 91% of Marylanders are REAL ID compliant.

Marylanders are encouraged to create a myMVA account to learn their REAL ID status before making an appointment. With a myMVA account, customers can also access their driver’s license information, check their vehicle registration status, view copies of any correspondence the Motor Vehicle Administration has sent to them, check their vehicle emissions inspection program deadlines and complete online services.

In addition to the birth certificate printing service, the Gaithersburg branch is also home to an E-ZPass Customer Service Center, TSA PreCheck Services and a Maryland Department of Veteran Affairs Benefits Office. The benefits offices have a fulltime veteran’s benefits specialist available to assist veterans and families applying for U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs benefits.
