Basic Rider Course 2 – Skills Practice (BRC2-SP)

The Basic Rider Course 2 – SP is an approximately five-hour course for the licensed rider who wants to improve or refresh their skills, or who has recently completed the Basic Rider Course and wants additional practice on their personal motorcycle.  Individuals enrolling in this course must have a valid Class M motorcycle license.

There is no formal classroom and no testing.  The class is conducted entirely on the range and consists of 10 riding exercises. Some of the exercises are borrowed from the Basic Rider Course (BRC) with some minor enhancements for the more experienced rider and there are several completely new exercises.

Instruction is provided by Motor Vehicle Administration Approved and Motorcycle Safety Foundation Certified Instructors. During the initial riding activities, each rider's ability to operate a motorcycle will be evaluated. Riders that cannot demonstrate minimum riding proficiency will not be allowed to continue and will need to consider enrolling in the Basic Rider Course​.  Riders who are not allowed to continue should contact the training center where they are taking the course to inquire about enrollment options for the Basic Rider Course.

Riders are expected to use their own motorcycle. Personal motorcycles must be street legal, in good operating condition and pass a routine pre-ride check given as a part of the course. Riders must assume all liability for their motorcycle in this course.  The training center or the Program will not be responsible for any damage to a rider’s motorcycle resulting from participation.  Riders are to provide their own riding gear.  See the note under Participant Requirements.

The course Instructors will continuously monitor and evaluate rider performance. To complete the course riders must satisfactorily meet the overall objectives of the course. Riders who pass will receive a Maryland Motorcycle Safety Program Completion Card.

General Information

  • ​Participants are expected to ride their own motorcycles. Motorcycles with sidecars or trikes may not be used.
  • Scooters may be used if they have an engine displacement of 51 cubic centimeters or more. Note: Please contact the Motorcycle Safety Program office or the training center where you intend to enroll to make arrangements.
  • Course participants are required to report to the scheduled session regardless of the weather.
  • The course is conducted by the Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration and meets or exceeds the standards established by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation.

Participant Requirements

  • ​Must be a licensed motorcycle operator.
  • Wear protective clothing (eye protection, suitable jacket, long pants, full-fingered gloves, and over-the-ankle footwear) during the riding portion. Participants are expected to provide their own helmets.  All helmets must be compliant with USDOT standards with proper labeling intact, must fit properly and in must be in good condition.  Ideally, motorcycle specific gear should be used.
  • Personal motorcycles must be in good mechanical condition, properly tagged and insured.
  • Attend the entire course and meet the overall course objectives.
  • Pay the course registration fee to be officially enrolled in a course. You may attempt to enroll in a course as a stand-by student by reporting to the center on the first day of the course and if selected paying the fee by credit or check card.
