The Vehicle Emissions Inspection Program (VEIP) may grant you an extension, an exemption or a waiver of the VEIP test requirements.
An EXTENSION provides you with some additional time to have your vehicle tested (e.g., your vehicle is inoperable or otherwise unable to meet the test due by date). Apply for an extension here.
An EXEMPTION permanently eliminates the need for your vehicle to be tested because the vehicle meets certain criteria. There is a list of vehicles currently exempt from emissions testing. If you are requesting an exemption, you must fill out a Certified Statement (EP-009) and send electronically with ContactMVA, mail to the VEIP program (see address below), or hand deliver it to any of the 18 VEIP stations located throughout Maryland.
A WAIVER eliminates the VEIP test requirements for only the remainder of your vehicle's current test cycle (a test cycle typically lasts two years). You must re-apply before each new test cycle to continue receiving the waiver. For quickest processing request a waiver online. You may also fill out the 
EP-001 A, upload and and send electronically with ContactMVA or mail to the VEIP program (address below). If you are requesting an Out-of-Area or Military Waiver, you must fill out a Certified Statement (EP-009) along with your waiver request.
No, as long as the vehicle is tested by the extension due date you will not be charged a late fee.
If I request an extension today how long must I wait before I am able to have my vehicle inspected?
Once you request an extension you must wait at least 48 hours from the time of the request to the time you actually have your vehicle inspected.
I requested an extension, but did not receive the notice. What can I do?
If you know your new inspection due date and did not receive a new notice you may use your registration card to have the vehicle tested. If you do not know you new inspection due date click here.
What should I do if I am not going to be in Maryland during my testing period?
MDOT MVA will accept vehicle emissions inspection test results from other states. To determine if the state you will be in is one of those states, check here. Please contact us if the state your vehicle is located in is NOT on our reciprocity list.

What if I am military and will miss my VEIP inspection due date?
If you are active military and currently serving outside of Maryland, MDOT MVA can assist in delaying your VEIP inspection or accepting a vehicle emissions inspection test result from another state. To determine if the state you will be in is one of those states, check here. If you are not in one of these states, complete the relevant sections of a VEIP Certified Statement and send to MDOT MVA with a copy of your military orders.
