Oakland, MD (May 19, 2025) – Garrett County residents now can take their driver’s skills test closer to home. The Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) celebrated a significant milestone by opening the first-ever driving course in Garrett County. Located at 400 Weber Road, Oakland, the new addition represents a major step forward in delivering safe and reliable services across Western Maryland. "Until now, most Garrett County residents had to travel more than 40 miles to our Cumberland branch to complete their driver’s skills test,” said MVA Administrator Chrissy Nizer. “Not everyone has the opportunity to take time away from work, school—and today, that changes. This course reflects our commitment to accessibility for all Marylanders, no matter where they live.” The expanded Oakland branch office will support non-commercial driver’s skills tests, which can be conveniently scheduled through myMVA online services accounts. Eight driver’s skills test appointments will be available during normal hours of operation. Hours for the branch office are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Maryland State Senator Mike McKay and State Delegate Jim Hinebaugh, both major advocates for providing Western Maryland constituents with essential services, joined the event. “I’m excited to be a part of this very important milestone in helping Western Marylanders have an essential service closer to home. I will aways continue to advocate for local access to these services,” said Senator McKay. At the event, Administrator Nizer emphasized the importance of safe driving practices. Whether a new driver or a seasoned motorist, all Marylanders are encouraged to stay focused behind the wheel, buckle up and never drive impaired. Thanks to additional transportation resources provided in Governor Wes Moore’s Fiscal Year 2026 budget, the Maryland Department of Transportation is investing in projects and policy reforms that will improve the safety and reliability of our network, spur economic growth and ensure our transportation system is in a state of good repair. As part of its mission, the MVA continues to find ways to improve access, enhance customer experience, and prioritize roadway safety statewide. The Oakland driving course sets a precedent for future initiatives aimed at better serving rural and underserved areas of Maryland.
