MVA, ABATE of Maryland Continue to Spread the Importance of Highway Safety During Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month

Partners to Celebrate 15th Year of Safety Event that Prioritizes Driver, Rider Education

WHAT: The Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration, ABATE of Maryland, Inc., and other community partners will continue their tour across the state to highlight Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month during a brief ceremony at the agency’s Hagerstown branch. In recognition of Governor Wes Moore proclaiming May as Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month in Maryland, the month-long campaign will provide education on the rules of the road for new and seasoned riders and encourage all drivers to share the road. Local community organizations and vendors will also be available from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., providing safety-related information.

WHEN: 10 a.m., Tuesday, May 14, 2024

WHO: Chrissy Nizer, Motor Vehicle Administrator and Governor Moore’s Highway Safety Representative
Ken Eaton, Executive Director, ABATE of Maryland, Inc.
Terry Baker, Delegate, Maryland
William Wivell, Delegate, Maryland
William M. Valentine, Delegate, Maryland
John Barr, President, Board of County Commissioners, Washington County

WHERE: MVA Hagerstown Branch Office
18306 Col Henry K Douglas Dr, Hagerstown, MD 21740

WHY: Each year in Maryland, more than 70 motorcycle riders and passengers are killed in traffic crashes and nearly 1,000 riders and passengers are injured. When there is a crash involving a car or truck and a motorcycle, the motorcyclist almost always loses. Because motorcycle riders are not protected by the vehicle like the occupants of a car or truck, motorcyclists are injured in nearly three out of four crashes. Drivers and riders have the responsibility to share the road safely.
